Ancillary 90 is a response to the need of a young family for quality, accessible housing amidst a housing crisis. In an area not zoned for subdivision, the proposal is a 90m2 ancillary dwelling and 30m2 accessory building, tightly constrained by a challenging site and strict planning rules.

The compact plan maximises utility through spatial relations, built-in furniture and cabinetry, and high, raking ceilings to increase volume. Generous outdoor spaces further enhance liveability.

Oriented for excellent solar access and views towards Mount Pirongia, the home’s simple gable forms and claddings reflect the agricultural history of the site, while planted embankments further help the dwelling nestle into the landscape.
